And so we begin

A proper introductory post is to come but I at least wanted to say welcome to Women's Studies, check out the links on the side to begin with, and let me know (for now) in the comments section about other blogs/newslinks/sites you think relevant to our discussions and course.

Happy Readings--

Just a couple of random comments, I wanted to suggest a film that we could watch on the film day, it's called Gia with Angelina Jolie, here is that summary:

Fact-based story of top fashion model Gia Marie Carangi follows her life from a rebel working in her father's diner at age 17 to her death in 1986 at age 26 from AIDS, one of the first women in America whose death was attributed to the disease. In between, she followed a downward spiral of drug abuse and failed relationships.

It is definitely one of my favorite movies because it crosses every boundary; drugs, sex, homosexuality, violence, and christ sake its Angelina Jolie. Here is the IMDB link if you would like to know more: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123865/

On a second note, I found the link for the gender bender Fa'Afafine culture that I was talking about in class. It is really interesting to see that womanly characteristics even in men are praised and actually encouraged. Here is the link, enjoy! http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/taboo/2963/Overview#tab-Videos/02772_04
